Democrat Aaron Ford has claimed the Nevada governorship, defeating incumbent Republican Joe Lombardo in an election that restores Democratic control of the state's top executive office. As the state's attorney general, Ford will become the first Black person to hold the position. His victory marks the second consecutive cycle in which a governor in Nevada failed to secure a second term.
The campaign centered on the cost of living, with Ford's team framing the election as a referendum on the national economic direction. Supporters repeatedly used the phrase "Lombardo-Trump economy" to link the incumbent to President Donald Trump. They argued that rising prices for gasoline, housing, and health care demonstrated poor management by the Republican administration. Ford positioned these domestic costs as the primary factor for voters to consider.
Democratic challengers also targeted specific federal policies that affected Nevada residents. Campaign materials warned that Trump's 2025 legislation, which combined tax cuts with increased spending, would disproportionately harm low-income Nevadans. The ticket also criticized trade tariffs, noting the state's heavy dependence on tourism. A separate point of contention was Lombardo's summer agreement with the Trump administration, a deal that facilitates the development of data centers on public land.
Ford's strategy mirrored the playbook Lombardo used in 2022 to unseat Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak. In that prior contest, Lombardo leveraged voter frustration with the economy to connect Sisolak to Democratic policies in Washington. Ford applied the same logic, arguing that voters should judge the incumbent on the performance of his party's federal leadership. This tactic proved effective in reversing the momentum Republicans had built after their 2022 win and Trump's 2024 presidential victory in the state.
Lombardo attempted to differentiate himself from the president while maintaining a close alliance. He joined Trump during a summer visit to Nevada and supported measures such as tax reductions on tips. However, he publicly opposed certain 2025 tariffs and highlighted differences with the president on solar power. The governor argued that he was lowering living costs locally while facing federal decisions he described as things he "can't control." He also used his law enforcement background to criticize Democrats on crime, but those arguments did not secure re-election.
The result provides a strategic advantage for Democrats heading into the 2028 presidential cycle. Nevada remains a competitive battleground with a history of contested outcomes. The state was previously a site where Trump allies prepared alternate elector slates to challenge Joe Biden's 2020 victory. Ford's win ends that period of Republican consolidation in the state's executive branch.
