Anthropic has introduced Claude Duet, a new application designed to help professionals and small businesses automate their daily workflows. The launch marks a significant move by the company into a crowded market of AI assistants that are increasingly shifting focus from simple chatbots to autonomous agents capable of executing complex tasks on behalf of users.

The primary differentiator for Duet is its deep integration capabilities. The system is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model and can connect to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive network allows the agent to interact with a wide variety of professional tools and services, enabling it to perform actions that go beyond standard text generation.

Unlike personal assistants that focus on errands or booking tickets, Anthropic positions Duet as a business tool. The company explicitly notes that the agent is not designed to handle personal tasks like purchasing movie tickets or managing personal schedules. Instead, it focuses on generating daily briefings, creating data dashboards, and suggesting strategic actions based on the user's specific professional data. This distinction aims to appeal to users who need structured, work-oriented automation rather than casual conversational help.

Operationally, Duet functions by completing tasks in the background within its own virtual machine. This allows users to continue their primary work while the agent processes requests. The system will only interrupt the user if it requires specific approval to proceed. Anthropic emphasizes that the agent proactively monitors ongoing tasks and delivers recommendations as it works, ensuring that users are kept informed without needing to constantly check on progress.

Security and financial transactions are handled with specific protocols to maintain user trust. Duet can make online purchases on behalf of users through Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, any sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, require explicit user approval. The agent is restricted from trading securities or moving money between accounts, limiting its financial scope to direct purchases.

To protect user data, Anthropic has introduced a new classifier that checks each message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the system is configured to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification. This layer of security is intended to make the agent suitable for handling professional data that might contain confidential details.

The release of Claude Duet comes as competitors like Meta, OpenAI, and others refine their own agent offerings. While Meta’s Muse serves as a personal assistant, the company has also released a business-focused version with app connections. Similarly, OpenAI’s Dots integrates with professional tools. Anthropic’s entry into this space signals a broader industry trend where AI agents are becoming central to business operations rather than just productivity aids.

Claude Duet is currently available for iOS and Android devices, as well as on the web through Claude.ai. Access is limited to Pro and Max customers who are participating in the research preview. Interested users must join a waitlist to gain access to the platform, indicating that Anthropic is rolling out the feature gradually to manage load and gather feedback.
