A central London club assault involving a celebrity has resulted in a suspended prison term for the performer involved. On Monday, Southwark Crown Court handed down sentences to two men who attacked a visitor on a dancefloor.
Chris Brown, 37, received an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, was sentenced to four months in prison, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay costs of £1,500.
Brown admitted to affray earlier this year regarding an incident that occurred in February 2023. The attack took place at the Tape private members club in Mayfair. CCTV footage presented in court showed Brown hitting Abraham Diaw four times with a glass bottle. Two of those blows struck the left side of Diaw's head, while one hit his shoulder.
Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC described the weapon as a heavy square-shaped tequila bottle. She told the court that Brown rained down further blows after Diaw turned away. Akinlolu then grabbed the victim in a bear hug while Brown threw additional punches. The entire incident lasted approximately 20 seconds around 3am.
Judge Baumgartner noted that Brown sat looking at the floor for much of the hearing in a packed public gallery. The judge warned that commercial success does not attract preferential treatment in court. He described the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head as plainly dangerous due to the risk of more serious injury.
