Apple's entry into the wide foldable market faces early usability questions. The iPhone Duo, now on shelves with limited stock, includes a fixed sidebar on its small outer display that reduces the usable viewing area.

The device features a 5.4-inch cover screen. On this panel, the system dock occupies the right side. This arrangement leaves a large portion of the display empty. One analysis estimates the sidebar consumes 15 percent of the total screen real estate.

Allison Johnson of The Verge noted the physical handling of the device. She found the iPhone Duo harder to use with one hand than the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The Samsung phone has a taller and narrower profile. This shape makes its cover screen easier to reach and control.

The design difference becomes clear when comparing the two outer displays. The iPhone Duo uses the sidebar to stretch media vertically. This makes content appear taller, similar to a standard slab phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a different approach. It leaves the bottom of the screen open for main content.

When the Fold 8 uses navigation gestures, it wastes very little screen space. If a user switches to a navigation bar, the wasted space increases slightly. However, the iPhone Duo keeps its dock fixed regardless of settings. This limits how much of the 5.4-inch screen the user can fill with active content.

The iPhone Duo is already available for purchase. Its distribution is currently restricted. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 continues to see strong market performance. The two devices offer different solutions for managing small displays on large folding hardware.
