Seventeen years old was the age of the McKinney resident arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 5 for allegedly plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self. The detention marks a significant escalation in threats against the Texas lawmaker, who is currently seeking a third term in Congress for the state’s third district. Campaign officials confirmed the arrest to NBC 5, noting that the congressman’s team was notified by U.S. Capitol Police on October 6.

Federal investigators believe the teen had been radicalized and was under surveillance by federal agents. According to the campaign, the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The specific target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17, an event that featured former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further details but had not responded as of this report.

Representative Self stated that his background in the military helped him maintain composure during the crisis. He noted that while the news was serious, his experience in combat zones allowed him to assess whether the suspect was a lone wolf without panic. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also took the threat seriously. Self indicated that while he has received threats in the past, this was the first instance to result in an arrest, underscoring the potential severity of the incident.

In response to the threat, Self and his team increased their situational awareness and security profile during the ongoing early voting period. Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the October 17 fundraiser as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the event, stating that it was a delightful occasion and no incident occurred. He has since continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting, asserting that the threat would not deter him from informing the public about his political agenda.

The plot unfolds against the backdrop of Self’s prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and asserting that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. The issue resonates locally, as McKinney recently approved a site plan for a mosque expansion after hours of contentious public comment, which was followed by an effort to recall several city council members.

Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot on social media. The teen’s identity has not been publicly released as the investigation continues. Self’s campaign emphasized that they remain vigilant but are proceeding with their scheduled events to maintain a normalcy in the race.

The stakes are high for both the candidate and his constituents as the election approaches. The incident highlights the growing intensity of political threats in North Texas. Self’s team remains focused on the upcoming election while monitoring the federal investigation. The arrest serves as a reminder of the security measures required for high-profile political figures in the region.
