Google caps Gemini Android chat list at five, consolidates settings
A server-side update pushes the new interface to Android users, merging preferences into a single page and limiting the visible history.

Google is deploying a major interface change to the Gemini app on Android, a move that standardizes the user experience across its mobile and desktop platforms. The update is being pushed through a server-side mechanism, meaning users are receiving the new design without needing to download a fresh version of the application from the Play Store.
The most visible change to the navigation drawer is the restriction on chat history. The side panel now displays only the five most recent items by default. Users must tap a "More" option to expand the list and access older conversations. This change aims to reduce visual clutter while keeping primary functions accessible. The search bar has also shifted to the top-right corner of the panel.
Navigation hierarchy has been adjusted to prioritize core features. "New chat" remains the first entry, followed immediately by the Library. Previously, the Library was positioned near the bottom of the drawer. For subscribers to the AI Ultra tier, the full expanded list includes Images, Scheduled, Daily brief, Customize, Students, Videos, and Gems.
Settings have been unified into a single page, ending the split between the account menu and a separate settings area. The account menu now handles only account switching, feedback, and help requests. The new consolidated Settings page begins with Manage account and Usage limits, followed by a comprehensive Preferences section.
The Preferences section lists Notifications, Personal Intelligence, Avatar, Task settings, Theme, Skills, Voice, Media, Device controls, Cart and orders, and Gemini Notebook. Theme is the only entry marked as new in this section. The page concludes with Data & privacy and Get support sections, which house options like Import memory, Contact info, and Report a problem.
This Android rollout follows the same changes released for iOS, macOS, and the web app last week. That previous update coincided with the launch of Gemini 4 Argon. The current push extends the redesigned interface to a broader base of Android users, aligning the mobile app with the recent desktop and web standards.
Recent developments in the Gemini ecosystem include the release of Gemini Notebook as a Connected App for deeper integration. Free users are now directed to "Auto" models as the app incorporates new thinking levels. Additionally, a new "Map" tool was introduced, replacing the previous "/" shortcut with an "@" symbol.
