Maryland State Senator Antonio Hayes has been appointed Chair of the Senate Finance Committee. This role places him at the head of the body responsible for legislation regarding healthcare, insurance, workers' rights, and economic development. Hayes is the third African American to lead this committee in Maryland history. He is also the first lawmaker from Baltimore City to hold this position since 2002.

The committee oversees bills that directly impact the financial stability of Maryland families and businesses. As the new chair, Hayes intends to focus on four main areas. He plans to prioritize health care affordability, improve access to prescription medications, and expand workforce development. He will also seek to strengthen protections for workers.

Hayes stated that the appointment is a responsibility to the people of Baltimore City and families across the state. He noted that committee decisions affect nearly every aspect of residents' lives. This includes whether families can afford prescriptions and access quality care. It also includes whether workers and businesses have the tools necessary to succeed.

Hayes grew up in West Baltimore, where he was raised by his grandmother. He witnessed the difficulties families face in obtaining affordable and quality medical care. When his grandmother developed Alzheimer's disease, Hayes served as her caregiver. This experience shaped his view of the financial and emotional strain placed on patients and their families.

His approach to policy will be informed by his personal history and four years of service on the House Health and Government Operations Committee. Hayes is taking the role at a time of major change for the state's health care system. The federal administration is pursuing sweeping changes to federal health care programs. These include Medicaid cuts enacted through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Hayes believes Maryland must prepare to protect residents from threats to their coverage and rising health care costs. He represents the 40th Legislative District in Baltimore City. He has served in the Maryland Senate since 2019. Before that, he served four years in the House of Delegates. His legislative work centers on ensuring families have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

The appointment marks a historic milestone for Black leadership in the Maryland Senate. It also provides a chance to bring the experiences of Baltimore communities into one of the General Assembly's most influential leadership positions. Hayes will lead the committee as it navigates upcoming legislative sessions involving state budget and policy decisions.
