Dale Brown, the head coach who guided LSU men's basketball to 448 wins, died Friday. He was 90 years old. His death occurred two days after the university announced he would receive the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.

Brown coached the Tigers for 25 seasons between 1972 and 1997. He holds the record for the most victories in school history. Under his leadership, the team won four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and appeared in the NCAA Tournament 13 times. The program reached the Final Four in 1981 and 1986.

His roster included NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Rudy Macklin. Brown was named AP National Coach of the Year in 1981 and received SEC Coach of the Year honors four times. He has been inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

In a statement, Brown’s family described him as a devoted humanitarian who prioritized the well-being of others. They stated that he "always led with the heart" and that Louisianans "loved him right back." The family noted that he fell in love with the state early in his career and maintained strong ties to its community.

Gov. Jeff Landry posted on X that Brown "put LSU Basketball on the map" and that his legacy would endure for decades. Sports journalist Marc J. Spears also used the platform to call Brown "an extraordinary human" and thanked him for sharing his wisdom.

Brown arrived in Baton Rouge in 1972 to build a competitive program. He traveled across the state to promote the team and engage fans. LSU won its first SEC title since 1954 in 1979. The university named the court inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center after him in 2022. It was later renamed Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court in 2023 to honor both coaches.

Born in Minot, North Dakota, on Oct. 31, 1935, Brown died eight days before his 91st birthday. In a 2025 interview with WAFB reporter Chris Nakamoto, Brown recalled a victory against top-ranked Kentucky where all five starters fouled out. He told his remaining players they were now "backups" rather than substitutes. He credited his mother for teaching him to stand up for what is right and warned that polishing one's image can tarnish character.
