Melania Trump announced on Friday that she has secured a six-day ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky. The pause in fighting is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Oct. 29, and aims to open a humanitarian corridor for aid and evacuation. Her office credited the First Lady alone with brokering the deal, a move that bypasses the President and other senior officials in the U.S. government.

The stated goal is to halt all military action so that non-military civilian leaders from Russia and Ukraine can enter the city. These teams will visit homes to assess needs for medicine, food, and water for a population described as mostly elderly. Residents who choose to leave will receive coordinated transportation to either Russia or Ukraine, according to the plan.

Mrs. Trump described the situation in Oleshky as a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. She noted that residents live with limited electricity, mined roads, and regular attacks. Her office said she acted as the "Exclusive Intermediary," working directly with leadership from both nations to define the terms, timing, and technical procedures of the localized truce. She stated that without her direct intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly commented on the arrangement, though Ukrainian officials indicated a tentative agreement exists. The First Lady arranged for Newsmax, a conservative media outlet, to document the work of the joint teams. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development "amazing news" on X, calling it a major positive step towards peace.

This announcement follows a recent call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the Pope expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after they were forcibly removed by Russia.

The truce comes while President Trump’s broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He has expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in recent days, suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader. Trump told reporters earlier this week that Russia has been fine on Ukraine, adding that they have not been doing much.
