A legal giant is closing its doors.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges announced on Wednesday that its management committee recommended the firm pursue an orderly wind-down. The top 20 U.S. law firm, which reported over $2 billion in revenue in 2025, will end more than 90 years of business operations. Partners are expected to vote on the decision in the coming days.

The move affects roughly 1,200 lawyers and staff. Reuters reports that the firm will provide 90 days of pay. This timeline forces employees to act quickly in a market already saturated with lateral hires.

Danielle Thompson, a legal recruiter and managing director at Damato Search Group, advises against waiting for partners to offer positions. She notes that many associates are currently in a holding pattern, hoping to follow their superiors to new firms. Thompson argues that this strategy is risky because partners have no obligation to bring associates along and no guarantee of a good fit.

Thompson urges employees to begin their job search immediately. She warns that the market is inundated with Weil associates competing with other lateral candidates. Waiting until the 90-day pay period expires puts candidates at a disadvantage. She recommends that non-lawyers follow similar advice, prioritizing proactive outreach over passive waiting.

Recruitment protocols require caution to avoid administrative errors. Thompson counsels about a dozen Weil associates weekly to track where their resumes are sent. If multiple recruiters submit a candidate to the same firm, the firm often views the process as sloppy. This can lead to disputes over placement fees and silence from hiring managers. Candidates should designate one trusted recruiter and limit distribution to verifiable contacts and known job boards.

The job market currently shows 27.1% of unemployed individuals searching for over six months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Thompson suggests that the favorable perception of a firm dissolution lasts only one to six months. She advises employees to accept that a short unemployment gap or a quick job change will not damage their careers. Employers understand the context of a surprise closure and are less likely to question the candidate's qualifications.
