The 1976 boxing classic Rocky will play in select U.S. theaters for five days this month to mark its 50th anniversary. The new 4K restoration runs from November 7 to November 11. Amazon MGM Studios, Park Circus, and Fathom Entertainment are presenting the event.
Stallone wrote the screenplay and stars as Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia boxer who gets a chance to fight heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. The film also features Talia Shire, Burt Young, and Burgess Meredith. Director John G. Avildsen won the Academy Award for Best Director. The movie also took home the awards for Best Picture and Best Film Editing. It received 10 nominations in total.
In 2006, the Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry. The selection recognized the movie as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. This preservation effort ensures the film remains part of the nation's documentary heritage.
The theatrical run includes a special featurette related to I Play Rocky. That upcoming film explores Stallone's efforts to secure the lead role. The featurette contains behind-the-scenes footage, clips, interviews, and a greeting from the cast of the new project.
Local audiences can see the film at AMC Loews Stony Brook 17, AMC Huntington Square 12 in East Northport, and Regal Cinemas in Deer Park. Tickets are available for advance purchase at fathomentertainment.com.
