Michelle Obama now holds a production credit for a stand-up comedy special, a role she did not hold when the project began. The former First Lady introduced the hour, which aired on Netflix on Oct. 27, and her production company, Higher Ground, served as a producer. This marks the first comedy special for the firm.
Zainab Johnson, whose popularity increased after her 2023 special Hijabs Off, says the collaboration began with a missed connection. In late 2024, while performing in Detroit, Johnson learned that Obama was nearby for a campaign event. Obama's team invited her to meet, but Johnson realized she did not have time to travel from a distant mall shuttle stop. She told the team she had to return to her show to work.
A second meeting occurred weeks later at a voter registration event in Atlanta. Johnson described the room as filled with prominent Hollywood figures, including Kerry Washington and Shonda Rhimes. She noted that some of these celebrities had previously ignored her. When Obama entered, she approached Johnson directly, greeted her by name, and hugged her. Obama then complimented Johnson's work to Rhimes, prompting the other women in the room to apologize for their earlier behavior.
Johnson discussed the timeline on the podcast I'm Having an Episode. She stated that in early 2026, she decided to film the new special regardless of external support. Inspired by Ali Wong's introduction for Sheng Wang, Johnson asked her managers to request a voiceover from Obama. She specified that she only wanted audio, not a video appearance.
About a week after making the request, Johnson received a text message at a dinner indicating that Obama was recording the introduction. Her managers then informed her that the Obamas wanted to produce the special as well. Johnson recalled her friend's reaction to the news, noting that it gave her the confidence to ask for more in future projects.
The special, titled Toxically Optimistic, opens with Johnson walking onto the Howard Theatre stage in Washington, D.C., while Obama's voice plays in the background. The hour includes a segment about Johnson purchasing a firearm in California. She described the process as requiring classes, certification, and a 20-question test. She missed two questions but passed, as up to five errors are permitted. She contrasted this with advice from friends in the South who suggested buying a gun at a gas station or Walmart.
Johnson also performed the material in Edinburgh, Paris, and Australia. She observed that international audiences often reacted to her line about owning a gun as if it confirmed their stereotypes about the United States. Another bit addresses her status as a Black woman in America, using the line that she must solve her own murder. Johnson said audiences responded with standing ovations and moments of silence, and she was glad the segment remained in the final edit.
The special also comments on the current state of the entertainment industry. Johnson said that while meetings are still friendly, funding is limited. She cited a recent billboard on La Brea Avenue for a procedural television show with an all-white cast of five. She stated that she had not seen such a cast in years and described the industry as regressing. She predicted the result would be very boring.
