Michelle Obama recorded the introduction for Zainab Johnson’s newest Netflix special, a first for the former first lady in the stand-up world. The hour, titled Toxically Optimistic, premiered on October 27, 2026. It marks the debut of a comedy special produced by the Obamas’ company, Higher Ground.

Johnson said the collaboration began with a missed connection in late 2024. She was performing in Detroit during Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. Obama’s team asked if Johnson could meet her at a nearby rally. Johnson drove to the venue but discovered the official entry required a shuttle from a mall ten miles away. She had to choose between meeting the former first lady and making her scheduled show. She told Obama’s team she needed to be a professional comedian and left without meeting her.

A few weeks later, the two women met in Atlanta at a bipartisan get-out-the-vote event. Johnson described sitting in the audience when Obama walked in. The former first lady spotted Johnson, pulled her aside for a hug, and introduced her to Shonda Rhimes. Obama told Rhimes that she had seen Johnson’s previous special, Hijabs Off, and called it fantastic. Johnson noted that other celebrities in the room who had initially ignored her later returned to apologize.

Johnson originally intended to fund and produce Toxically Optimistic herself. She pitched the idea of asking Obama to record a voice-over introduction to her managers in early 2026. About a week later, she was eating dinner when her phone rang. Obama’s team informed her that the former first lady was currently recording the intro. Simultaneously, her managers called to say they wanted to produce the entire special. Johnson accepted the offer on the spot.

The special includes material about Johnson buying a gun in California. She recounted taking a 20-question multiple-choice test and getting two answers wrong. She noted that applicants can miss up to five questions and still receive a firearm. She contrasted this with her experiences touring in the U.K., France, and Australia, where audiences reacted with surprise to the idea of civilian gun ownership. In Edinburgh, older audience members laughed nervously when she said she owned a gun, then relaxed when she explained it was not on her person for customs.

Johnson also addressed the state of television opportunities for actors of color. She described driving past a billboard in Los Angeles for a procedural drama. All five cast members listed on the advertisement were cisgender white people. She said the sight felt like a regression to the 1990s. She expressed concern that the industry was returning to defaulting to white actors for leading roles.

The special is now available on Netflix. Higher Ground has not announced a release date for its next comedy project. Johnson continues to tour her stand-up sets in the United States and internationally.
