For investors who backed Anthropic in its early days, the upcoming public listing represents a significant financial milestone. The AI company is expected to go public this year, with a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion. Even before that listing occurs, the stakes held by venture capital firms and individual early backers are already valued in the billions based on the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion.

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, stands out as one of the most significant individual beneficiaries of this growth. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt invested in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at just $461 million. His early commitment has since grown into a holding that represents approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that minority stake is worth nearly $10 billion.

Institutional investors have also seen substantial returns, particularly those who entered at later stages of the company's development. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage investment has appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position could double in value once the company completes its initial public offering.

Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic's Series D funding round, has invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. The firm's cumulative investment is currently valued at $14 billion. This growth reflects the broader trend of massive capital inflows into the leading AI laboratory, which has attracted both early and late-stage capital in large volumes.

Sequoia, a well-known venture capital firm, entered the picture more recently. The firm first backed the AI lab earlier this year when the company's valuation had already reached $380 billion. By investing $3 billion, Sequoia secured approximately 1% ownership. This relatively recent entry has already resulted in a return that is more than double the initial investment.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen its portfolio value increase significantly. The firm initially invested $35 million in Anthropic's 2023 Series C round. It subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. While the exact current value of their stake is described as being worth billions, the trajectory of their investment follows the broader surge in Anthropic's market cap. It is noted that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.

Perhaps the most dramatic return on investment belongs to Spark Capital. As the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, Spark Capital invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round. At that time, the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned by more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion. This massive appreciation highlights the rapid scale-up of Anthropic's valuation in just a few years.

The impending IPO is expected to provide a liquidity event for these investors, potentially solidifying their gains. For ordinary people, the news serves as a marker of the current state of the AI economy, where early bets on leading companies can yield extraordinary returns. The sheer scale of these valuations underscores the high stakes involved in the AI sector as it moves toward public markets.

As the company prepares for its listing, the focus remains on how these private valuations will translate into public market prices. The stakeholders named here, from individual tech leaders to major institutional investors, have positioned themselves to benefit from what is shaping up to be one of the largest IPOs in recent history. The details of the offering will likely provide further clarity on the final valuation and the distribution of shares.
