Baltimore Extends Free Basement Disinfection to Year-Round Sewer Failures
The city's SOS program previously covered only flooding tied to storms.

Baltimore residents can now request free professional disinfection of residential basements after sewage overflows, even when no storm is involved. Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the Baltimore Department of Public Works announced the expansion of the Sewage Onsite Support program, which was previously limited to cleanup following storm events. The program covers both heavy rainfall flooding and sewage backups caused by failures in the municipal network on dry days.
The change was developed with the Maryland Department of the Environment. Renters and homeowners affected by municipal line problems can request assistance by calling Baltimore's 311 line. Local authorities said rapid disinfection helps prevent pathogens from spreading and protects families in vulnerable communities.
Sewage overflows can push wastewater into basements through floor drains or pipes when the sewer system is overwhelmed or blocked. Standing water in a basement creates conditions where bacteria and other organisms can multiply, increasing exposure risks for people living in the home.
The city did not release data on the number of households affected by sewage backups or the cost of expanding the program. Residents seeking cleanup help can reach the 311 service line.
