Barcelona hosts Real Madrid this Sunday in a high-stakes La Liga match that pits two of football's most decorated clubs against each other.
The rivalry, known as El Clasico, has a history stretching back to 1902 and currently sees both teams with 106 wins each. A victory for either side on Sunday would give them the lead in the all-time record. The upcoming fixture draws global attention, with millions of viewers expected to tune in to watch the contest unfold.
Past iterations of this matchup featured iconic figures such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and David Beckham. More recent contests have highlighted emerging talents like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha at Barcelona, alongside Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr. at Real Madrid. The presence of these players continues to fuel interest in a rivalry that transcends the sport itself.
Historical data shows a pattern of high-scoring and dramatic encounters in this series. In a 2017 league match at the Santiago Bernabeu, Barcelona won 3-2 after a late goal from Messi marked his 500th for the club. Sergio Ramos was sent off in that game, and the result briefly moved Barcelona to the top of the table, though Real Madrid ultimately won the title by three points.
Another notable instance occurred in 2007 when a 19-year-old Messi scored a hat-trick to help Barcelona secure a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou. The team played with 10 men for much of the match, with Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring twice for Real Madrid. Both clubs finished that season with 76 points, but Real Madrid claimed the championship based on head-to-head record.
In 2009, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabeu in a dominant performance that saw Thierry Henry score twice. Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring for the hosts, but the visitors took control quickly. Barcelona won the league that year by nine points, cementing a season of success.
The 2011 Copa del Rey final ended in a 1-0 Real Madrid victory in extra time. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive goal with a header from Angel Di Maria, who was later sent off. That win marked the first trophy for then-manager Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid's first domestic cup since 1993.
