A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday after a strong current carried her away in the Bahamas while she tried to rescue her two sons. Royal Bahamas Police Force officers on the island of Bimini have opened an investigation into the sudden death.
Police reported that the woman was snorkelling with her husband and their children near the southern point of the island. A powerful current swept both boys into the open water. The woman was pulled from her position as she attempted to reach them. Rescue teams later retrieved the two boys from the sea.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. The force stated that responders had already transported her to a local clinic for medical care. A doctor there pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water.
The woman is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. The Royal Bahamas Police Force said foul play is not currently suspected. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the precise cause of death.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office stated that officials are in contact with local authorities and are supporting the family. The spokesperson added that the department's thoughts are with the family of the deceased.
