Smartphone shipments in China fell to their lowest level in 14 years during the third quarter of 2026, marking a sharp contraction in the world's largest mobile phone market. The decline was driven by rising memory prices that squeezed manufacturer margins and pushed consumer prices higher. According to a report released by Counterpoint Research on October 23, total unit shipments dropped by 10% compared to the same period in the previous year.

Apple emerged as the primary beneficiary of this restructuring. The company captured 19.5% of the Chinese market share in the third quarter, a gain of 4.8 percentage points from the same quarter in 2025. This surge moved Apple from sixth place to second, trailing only Huawei. No other brand among the top six saw an increase in market share during this period. Huawei maintained its position at the top with a 21.3% share, up 5.3 points year over year.

The rest of the major manufacturers faced steep losses. Vivo’s share decreased by 2.8 points to end the quarter at 15.2%. OPPO saw a 1.3 point drop, settling at 15.1%. Xiaomi lost 1.6 points to finish with 13.5%, while HONOR declined by 2.2 points to 12.7%. The remaining manufacturers combined accounted for a 2.8% share, down by two points from the prior year.

Counterpoint attributed Apple’s performance largely to the iPhone 18 Pro series. The firm noted that the lineup experienced a strong launch, with sales in the first three weeks rising by 23.5% compared to the previous year’s iPhone 17 Pro models. The analysis suggests that the delayed release of the base iPhone 18 may have shifted consumer preference toward the higher-end Pro devices, bolstering early sales figures.

These figures contrast with data from another major research firm, IDC, which published its own estimates a few days prior. IDC reported a steeper decline, stating that Chinese smartphone shipments fell by 15.4% year over year in the third quarter. In IDC’s calculation, Apple’s market share rose to 17.8%, although its actual unit shipments dropped by 4.3%. The discrepancy in methodology leads to different conclusions about the severity of the market downturn.

IDC also highlighted a weak global environment, estimating that worldwide smartphone shipments fell by a record 22% year over year. Within that global context, Apple posted the smallest decline among the top five manufacturers, losing only 4% of its units. The firm described the global picture as particularly challenging for all major players.

Counterpoint warned that market conditions may remain difficult through the fourth quarter. Higher device prices are encouraging consumers to delay upgrades, wait for promotional pricing, or opt for refurbished units. This shift in buying behavior is expected to place additional pressure on demand in the coming months.
