An 18-year-old resident of Hamburg faces criminal charges for allegedly directing a 14-year-old girl in Indiana to take her own life. German prosecutors confirmed the arrest on Friday, noting that the detention occurred the previous day following intelligence shared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The suspect is accused of indirect murder and grievous bodily harm. According to the Hamburg public prosecutor's office, he was a member of an online group called Nefarious Maniac Kult, or NMK. This group operates within a larger global network known as COM.
Prosecutors state that the suspect, who was 17 at the time, used the Discord platform to exert influence over the Indiana girl between September and October. They described her as psychologically fragile. The charges allege that he pressured her to cut herself and write the letters NMK on a wall using her own blood. He allegedly required video recordings of these acts.
A few days after the self-harm incidents, the girl hanged herself in her bedroom. The suspect is also accused of seeking a video recording of her death. Prosecutors said he believed the footage would improve his standing within the group or assist him in gaining entry.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O'Malley stated that his office collaborated with the Fort Wayne Police Department to provide German authorities with the data needed for the arrest. The Fort Wayne Homicide Unit identified the suspect as a contributor to the juvenile's death. O'Malley said, "Anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand this: There is no safe haven from justice. It doesn't matter where you live or where you try to hide. The FBI will work with our partners around the world to find you and hold you accountable."
FBI Director Kash Patel cited a 300 percent increase in cases of nihilistic violent extremism between September 2024 and September 2025. Many of these cases involve a group known as 764. Members of 764 are said to encourage self-harm and violence without a specific ideology. They often urge victims to produce videos documenting acts of self-harm.
