Google is releasing version 5.11 of its Health app this week, shifting the focus of its wearable ecosystem from basic step counting to complex metabolic monitoring. The update targets users of the Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch series, aiming to reduce the friction of manual data entry while providing deeper insights into long-term health markers.

The primary change involves the automatic recognition of physical activities. Devices can now identify up to 100 distinct workout types, a tenfold increase from the previous limit of 10. This expansion includes specific categories for strength training, swimming, racket sports, and team sports. The feature is live on the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch models 3, 4, and 5, with the Fitbit Edge scheduled to receive the update on October 27.

Google attributes the improved accuracy to a contextual reasoning engine. The system analyzes a user's historical workout patterns and manual corrections to refine its predictions. According to the company, this approach makes detections nearly twice as accurate and reduces missed logs by more than 50 percent. A session qualifies for automatic logging if it lasts at least 15 minutes and shows a sustained elevation in heart rate. Summaries typically appear in the app within 30 minutes of the activity ending.

For subscribers to Google Health Premium, the update adds two new Health Guardian features for Fitbit Air and Edge owners. These tools track blood pressure trends and insulin resistance. Blood pressure reports are available to users who wore the Fitbit Air for at least five consecutive days in October. Insulin resistance trends, which monitor monthly shifts in metabolic health, require at least seven days and nights of wear during the current month. The first reports for both features are due at the start of November.

The app also integrates more directly with continuous glucose monitors. In the US, users can connect Abbott's Lingo device directly to the Health app, with readings syncing within 30 minutes. The interface has been updated to rename the 'Blood glucose' section to 'Glucose,' offering new charts and the ability to set custom time-in-range goals. Premium members can now query the Google Health Coach about these specific glucose trends.

Sleep tracking algorithms have been adjusted to account for step data, which helps distinguish short awakenings, such as bathroom trips, from longer interruptions. Users can also manually delete naps that do not align with their daily schedule directly from the nap card. The update is currently rolling out to iOS users and is in the process of reaching Android devices.
