The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania. These warnings come as a new weather system moves across the continent.

Queensland residents have already endured a week of extreme weather. Several areas recorded more than double their average October rainfall in just a few days. The Sunshine Coast hinterlands and Caboolture logged seven-day totals between 300mm and 400mm. Some specific locations reached 450mm.

The heaviest rain fell on Thursday. Torrential downpours stretched from Caboolture south to the Border Ranges. Some places received well over 200mm of water in a single day. This intense rainfall triggered flash flooding across the region.

The Queensland fire department conducted more than 16 swift-water rescues during the peak of the storms. In one incident, crews used a raft to reach an elderly man. He was clinging to the roof of his vehicle in Caboolture. The State Emergency Service also received hundreds of calls for help. Several schools closed on Friday due to the conditions.

Senior BoM meteorologist David Crock noted that the weather patterns were typical of summer months like January or February. He explained that large amounts of moisture had built up over seven to 10 days across Queensland and northern New South Wales. The persistent pattern drew in significant moisture, leading to the high totals.

The storm system is expected to continue into the weekend. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast for central and eastern Queensland on Saturday. Locations under threat include Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast hinterlands, and Roma. Crock stated that there is plenty of rain across the south-east and much of Queensland.

A cold front will cross New South Wales on Sunday. This front will bring severe thunderstorms to the west of the state, north-eastern Victoria, Sydney, and Brisbane. Heavy rain is also expected to develop in Tasmania overnight into Sunday morning. The BoM currently has nine flood warnings in place for southern Queensland.
