Starbucks Returns Bearista Cup for 2026 Holiday Season: Scarcity Strategy Aims to Boost Sales
The coffee chain is re-releasing its viral bear-shaped cup in two waves this winter, aiming to repeat the sales surge that turned U.S. comparable transactions positive in the last fiscal year.

Starbucks is bringing back the viral Bearista glass cup in two stages during the 2026 holiday season, a move designed to drive foot traffic and capitalize on the 'cute economy' trend among younger consumers. The 20-ounce bear-shaped vessel, which features a green hat and a candy cane-striped straw, will first appear in a new mystery collection on Nov. 5, followed by the return of the original design on Dec. 1.
The company’s previous release of the cup in December 2025 triggered a frenzy that sold out inventory in less than a day. That surge contributed to a pivotal shift in financial performance. In the fiscal 2026 first quarter, which ended in December 2025, U.S. comparable transactions turned positive for the first time in two years. U.S. same-store sales rose by 4%, a figure that exceeded analyst expectations and marked a milestone in CEO Brian Niccol’s effort to revitalize the brand.
Starbucks is layering its holiday offerings to maintain momentum. The 'Holiday Bearista' collection, which includes drinkware, plush keychains, and accessories, launches on Nov. 5. This is followed by the 'Red Cup Day' promotion on Nov. 17, where customers receive reusable holiday cups with handcrafted drink orders. The original Bearista cost $29.95 last year, while resold units have fetched hundreds of dollars online. The company has not yet announced the price for this year’s new mystery cups.
Wall Street analysts are watching these promotions closely as indicators of the turnaround’s success. Nick Setyan, an analyst at Mizuho, noted that merchandise is becoming a standard engagement tool across the restaurant industry, citing competitors like Dutch Bros. Setyan expects Starbucks to replicate last year’s holiday success, although he recently cut his price target for the stock to $105 from $115. He cited lower valuations among peers and a reduced profit forecast for fiscal 2027, while maintaining a hold rating.
The economic environment presents challenges for consumer spending. AAA data shows that the average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.06 in October 2025. By October 2026, that price had risen to approximately $4.28. Despite this inflationary pressure, Setyan argues that consumers are shifting their spending toward perceived value rather than just low prices. 'If they believe the experience is worth it, they’re willing to spend,' he said.
Marketing experts attribute the cup’s appeal to a calculated strategy of scarcity. Kian Bakhtiari, founder of The People, a consultancy focused on Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers, stated that limiting the number of available items made the product more desirable as it became harder to obtain. Starbucks is leveraging social media to amplify this effect, with recent Instagram and TikTok posts about the rollout generating more than 100,000 combined likes. The company’s promotional video asks, 'Why you so cute?', tapping directly into the collectible product trend.
CEO Brian Niccol, who joined Starbucks from Chipotle more than two years ago, has prioritized creating viral moments to drive brand loyalty. In July, he stated that the company is investing in areas that drive transactions and help customers understand what the brand stands for. This approach includes events like the Unicorn Frappuccino promotion at the Coachella music festival in April. The strategy aims to win over skeptical investors by demonstrating that the 'Back to Starbucks' plan is gaining traction, even after a slower-than-expected start.
Starbucks stock has outperformed the broader market in 2026. Shares are up nearly 21% over the past 12 months, compared to a 12.8% gain for the S&P 500. The stock traded above $100 per share as of Wednesday morning, though it remains about 7% below its 52-week high of $110.51 reached in mid-August. The company will report its fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings, covering the September quarter, on the evening of Oct. 30. The impact of this year’s Bearista promotion will not be reflected in financial results until the release of the December quarter in early 2027.
