Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel has died following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a Spanish second division match on Monday. The 30-year-old player was in the hospital intensive care unit after suffering a cardiac arrest in an ambulance on the way to the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.
The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time in a 2-2 draw against visiting Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The ball was cleared from the Tenerife penalty area and bounced toward midfield. De Miguel, who had entered the game as a substitute in the 59th minute while his team led 2-0, was challenged by Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. Spanish media reported that Owono’s knee struck de Miguel in the chest.
Referees immediately showed Owono a red card. Players waved medical staff onto the pitch to treat de Miguel, who was lying prone on the grass. The match was abandoned shortly after, with players visibly in tears. De Miguel was admitted to the intensive care unit at the hospital in Santa Cruz.
The club issued a statement on Tuesday morning confirming the death. It read: “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, we communicate the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.” The statement added: “There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing to mitigate this feeling full of sadness.”
The club said it was with his family and loved ones and with the people of Tenerife, who were mourning the outcome. The player’s family expressed gratitude for the support received and asked for privacy during this time.
De Miguel was born in Madrid and made his professional debut with Castellon in August 2024 at age 27. He had previously played for eight clubs in Spain since his 2015 debut with Leganes B. In the 2023-2024 season, he scored 16 goals to lead his side to promotion to the second division. He signed a three-year contract with Tenerife in 2025.
