The Royal Navy has put three of its four Vanguard-class nuclear deterrent submarines at sea simultaneously. This is the first time the fleet has operated with such a large number of vessels afloat in five years. The ships currently active are HMS Vanguard, HMS Vigilant, and HMS Vengeance. HMS Victorious remains in port for maintenance.

A navy source told The Times that the deployment is unusual. The report did not explain the specific operational reasons for the move. At least one of the three submarines is armed with ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads. The UK maintains a continuous at-sea deterrent, meaning at least one submarine is always on patrol as a security guarantee.

Navy Lookout, an independent publication, assessed the status of the vessels. It suggested the second boat is likely preparing to relieve a patrol submarine. The third is probably conducting sea trials or work-up activity. HMS Vanguard completed a 200-day patrol last year. This is just one week shorter than the 207-day record set by HMS Victorious in 2021.

The timing of the deployment follows statements from Defence Secretary Wes Streeting. Last week, Streeting warned that Britain must be prepared for war. He wrote in the Telegraph on Saturday that the country has 1,000 days to achieve this readiness. Streeting noted that adversaries’ capacity to attack could peak by 2030. He stated that the government will ensure the nation is ready to fight and win by that deadline.

A defence ministry spokesperson told Sky News that the nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of national security. The spokesperson said the UK is the only European ally that commits its nuclear force to NATO defence. This arrangement allows all NATO members to benefit from British protection. The ministry did not link the specific deployment of three boats to the 1,000-day plan.

The move coincides with closer cooperation between the UK and France. Last week, British and French fighter jets conducted their first joint exercise involving French airborne nuclear capability. RAF Typhoon fighters escorted the French jets in a simulated strike. Catherine Vautrin, France’s Armed Forces Minister, said independent nuclear forces do not prevent coordination. She added that nuclear cooperation between the two nations continues to deepen.

Streeting’s warning came after the government launched its Be Ready campaign. The campaign urges households to store three days of food, water, cash, and a wind-up radio. This preparation is meant to handle cyberattacks or weather events that disrupt infrastructure. Reports also indicate Russia has used fishing trawlers to track undersea cables, adding to concerns about maritime security.
