The sudden siege of Hebron has left thousands of residents stranded in a city where entry and exit points are now firmly closed.

Israeli forces have implemented a full lockdown of the West Bank, a decision that has resulted in the forced displacement of 2,200 people in Hebron alone. This escalation occurred after two Palestinian gunmen attacked an Israeli army reserve base on Friday. Both attackers and two Israeli soldiers were killed in the incident. The military response has been swift and extensive, with hundreds of raids conducted since the initial attack. Local mayor Yousef al-Ja'bari confirmed the displacement figures and noted that the city has been inaccessible to its residents since Saturday.

The timing and method of the evacuation orders have created significant hardship for local families. Residents reported that soldiers announced the orders over loudspeakers late at night, leaving households with minimal time to pack essential items. The lack of preparation meant that many families had few options for where to go once they were forced out. Al-Ja'bari emphasized that the city was effectively sealed off on Saturday, preventing people from moving in or out. This isolation has intensified the sense of urgency and confusion among the population, who are now living under a strict military presence.

The military operation extends beyond Hebron to at least 15 other areas across the West Bank. Raids have taken place in northern cities such as Jenin and Nablus, as well as central locations including Ramallah, Al-Bireh, Birzeit, and occupied East Jerusalem. Bethlehem in the south has also been affected. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported that approximately 70 Palestinians were arrested during these operations. The broad scope of the raids suggests a coordinated effort to secure the region following the deadly attack on the reserve base.

The Palestinian Authority has described the recent actions as a form of collective punishment. They cited specific measures such as home demolitions, the forced displacement of entire neighborhoods, and the closure and siege of Palestinian cities. The PA has urged the international community to apply pressure on Israel to protect the residents of Hebron. Hamas also issued a statement, claiming that the campaigns and escalations carried out by the occupation and its settlers will only fuel further outrage among the population. These reactions highlight the growing tension between the governing bodies and the military forces in the region.

Hebron is the most populous governorate in the West Bank, with about 200,000 Palestinians living in the city itself and another 600,000 in the surrounding area. Issa Amro, a local activist and political analyst, stated that these 800,000 people are now under siege with all entrances and exits closed. He noted that there is no safe place for anyone to hide inside the city, describing the atmosphere as one of genuine fear. The scale of the population affected underscores the significant human impact of the current lockdown and military operations.

The current events are unfolding in the days leading up to Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27. West Bank correspondent Nour Odeh observed that Israeli politicians are attempting to capitalize on the attack for political gain. She noted that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party, along with their right-wing coalition allies, are currently behind in the polls. Consequently, they are trying to present a strong stance by emphasizing their efforts to combat Palestinian threats. Netanyahu has also hinted at future moves, saying that a big surprise awaits the Palestinian Authority, though he did not specify whether he plans to dismantle it.

The combination of a full lockdown, widespread arrests, and political maneuvering creates a volatile environment for the residents of the West Bank. The military presence in Hebron and other cities has altered the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of people. As the election date approaches, the actions taken by the Israeli government may have lasting implications for the political landscape and the status of the Palestinian Authority. The international community is now watching closely to see how the situation evolves in the coming days.
