Apple TV subscribers in the United States can now watch Formula 1 coverage with Dolby Atmos audio. The first race to feature this spatial sound format is the United States Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend.
The audio upgrade went live on Friday, October 23. Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the partnership earlier this month. They stated that Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV would gain Dolby Atmos support starting with the Grand Prix weekend. This makes the Austin event the first Formula 1 race ever broadcast in the format.
Apple describes the sound design as a way to place viewers in the middle of race weekend. The audio mix includes team radio, commentary, roaring engines, and on-track battles. The company also notes that the combination of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision visuals aims to put fans at the heart of the action.
First practice has already concluded, but remaining sessions are available for viewers. Practice 2 is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at 5 p.m. ET. On Saturday, October 24, Practice 3 begins at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying at 5 p.m. ET. The main race is set for Sunday, October 25, at 4 p.m. ET.
Apple is hosting a live screening of the Sunday race at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. The same location welcomed Apple CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien on Friday for the iPhone Duo launch. The store serves as a hub for the event.
The company has also updated Apple Maps for the occasion. Apple expanded its Detailed City Experience to Austin and added a specific map of the Circuit of The Americas. This map includes turn numbers, grandstands, and 3D landmarks to help fans navigate the venue.
Apple TV costs $14.99 per month or is available as part of the Apple One bundle. The service streams the race alongside original shows such as Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
