Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alex de Minaur 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to capture the Vienna Open title. The victory marks the Spaniard’s fourth championship of the year and his 28th overall in professional competition.
Alcaraz now holds a perfect 7-0 record against the Australian. The two players have competed against each other on grass, clay, indoor hard courts, and outdoor hard courts without the Spaniard dropping a set. Alcaraz entered the final as the second seed, while de Minaur, the fifth seed, was seeking his second title of the season.
The match concluded with a sequence of shots that showcased Alcaraz’s tactical range. He drew de Minaur to the net with a sliced backhand drop shot. After de Minaur retrieved the ball, Alcaraz executed a backhand lob. The Australian volleyed the return near the net, allowing Alcaraz to finish the point with a cross-court forehand that landed just inside the line.
Following the final point, Alcaraz displayed visible relief and joy. He noted that he aimed to play aggressively, forcing de Minaur to play smarter and more solidly to have a chance at victory. The Spaniard described the week as emotional and amazing, particularly after finding his rhythm in the decisive moments of the match.
Alcaraz is returning to full physical fitness after being limited by injury and fatigue earlier in the season. His win in Vienna follows a strong run in the ATP 500 event. In the semifinals, de Minaur defeated Alexander Zverev, who moves to the top of the world rankings on Monday. Alcaraz advanced by defeating Daniil Medvedev.
