Alphabet shares fell nearly 12 percent on Wednesday afternoon, marking one of the steepest post-earnings declines in the company's history. The drop followed the release of third-quarter financial results, which showed that while total revenue increased, profit margins contracted and key growth metrics slowed.

The tech giant reported total revenue of approximately $128 billion for the July to September period. Net income reached more than $26 billion, a figure roughly $9 billion lower than the same period last year. Although revenue rose 25 percent year over year, the company posted earnings per share of $2.12, falling short of the $3.02 consensus projection held by analysts.

Philipp Schindler, the company's Chief Business Officer, addressed the shifting dynamics of search during the earnings call. He noted that search volume grew by 12 percent compared to the previous year, a pace slower than the 17 percent growth seen in the second quarter and the 19 percent growth recorded in the first quarter. Search revenue remained flat during the third quarter.

Schindler explained that AI Mode queries generate less revenue than standard web searches. He stated that these AI-driven searches contain fewer advertisements and those ads cost less to run. This admission highlighted a specific challenge for Google's strategy, as the company pivots heavily toward its Gemini-powered AI search platform.

Despite the earnings miss in core metrics, Google's Cloud division outperformed expectations. Cloud revenue crossed the $30 billion mark, exceeding analyst estimates by approximately one billion dollars. The strong cloud performance could not offset the disappointment regarding the profitability of the company's flagship AI search tools.

The financial results underscore the tension between expanding AI usage and maintaining profit margins. Google expects to increase its spending on AI infrastructure in the coming year. Investors appear concerned that the rapid adoption of AI chatbots and the lower revenue yield per AI query will continue to pressure earnings growth in the months ahead.
