Amazon Expands Locker Network to Over 25,000 Sites as 3-Day Pickup Window Remains Strict
The service offers a fee-free alternative to home delivery, but shoppers must retrieve items within three calendar days to avoid automatic returns.

Amazon has integrated secure self-service pickup stations into its standard delivery infrastructure, providing a structured alternative for customers who cannot receive packages at home.
The company operates more than 25,000 pickup locations across the United States as of 2026. In August, the retailer reported that this network included over 750 stations situated on more than 500 college campuses. This expansion targets students who frequently change residences or lack secure package rooms in dormitories. The service is designed for apartment residents, those with irregular work schedules, and individuals concerned about unattended deliveries.
Eligibility for these stations is governed by specific physical constraints. Amazon’s 2026 guidance limits eligible packages to items weighing less than 10 pounds and measuring less than 16 by 12 by 14 inches. Products must be sold or fulfilled by Amazon. Common items that fit these parameters include books, clothing, compact electronics, and small household goods. Shoppers must verify availability at checkout, as oversized packaging can disqualify an item that appears small on a product page.
Cost structures for the service distinguish between the pickup point and the shipping method. Amazon does not charge a separate fee for using a Locker. However, standard shipping rates still apply based on the order value and the customer’s membership status. Prime members pay $14.99 per month or $139 annually for 2026. Non-Prime customers may qualify for free shipping on orders meeting a $35 minimum purchase threshold. The Locker itself requires no additional subscription, meaning customers do not need to purchase Prime solely to access the stations.
The collection process is time-sensitive. Amazon allows three calendar days for customers to retrieve their orders. This window includes weekends and holidays. If a package remains unclaimed past the deadline, the system automatically returns the item and issues a refund. Customers can delegate this task to another person by forwarding the delivery confirmation and pickup instructions. Access is typically granted via a six-digit code, a barcode, or the Amazon Shopping app, depending on the specific station model.
Availability varies by geography. Major metropolitan areas such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston offer multiple options. Rural communities generally have fewer stations, which may require longer drives. Some stations operate during host business hours, while others are accessible around the clock. Shoppers are advised to select a location along their regular travel route to minimize the effort required for pickup.
