Reynaldo Mayna Cordero, a 35-year-old resident of Bedford Avenue, stands accused of stalking and raping a 27-year-old woman in Bed-Stuy. Police charged him with rape, two counts of sexual abuse, and two counts of forcible touching after he was taken into custody around 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3.
The investigation traces back to shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 1. On that date, the victim was walking near the intersection of Willoughby and Bedford Avenues when a man on an e-bike approached her from behind. He slapped her buttocks and rode away, according to police. He then returned and followed her to a nearby apartment building. Surveillance video shows the suspect entering the building behind the woman. Inside, he attacked her and raped her on a staircase before leaving on the e-bike.
Officers from the 79th Precinct handled the initial response. EMS transported the victim to a local hospital, where her condition was listed as stable. Cordero was arrested within the area of the 77th Precinct. Authorities have not released the suspect's exact location of apprehension beyond that precinct boundary.
NYPD data shows a 44% year-to-date increase in reported rapes in the 79th Precinct compared to the same period last year. Citywide, rape reports have also risen. The NYPD noted that 25% of all rapes reported this year involved incidents that occurred in prior years. This indicates that survivors are coming forward to report sexual violence that previously went unrecorded.
The investigation into Cordero's case is ongoing. No plea has been entered, and no trial date has been set.
