Cubs and Padres Join Dodgers in Race for Tarik Skubal

Los Angeles Dodgers fans face a new challenge in securing Tarik Skubal. Two additional major league teams, the Chicago Cubs and the San Diego Padres, have entered the race for the pitcher's signature. This development complicates the Dodgers' efforts to retain the player before the MLB lockout begins in early December.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan reported that the Cubs desire Skubal to lead their starting rotation. However, the organization doubts it can match the projected contract value. Passan noted that Skubal's deal is expected to exceed $300 million, with potential offers reaching the $400 million range.

The Padres also view Skubal as a solution to their pitching staff gaps. San Diego lost Michael King, who opted out of his three-year contract, and Nick Pivetta, who was placed on the injured list for most of the season. Passan wrote that the team needs a rotation anchor and that Skubal would more than suffice.

Despite the interest from Chicago and San Diego, Passan believes the final competition will narrow down to the Dodgers and the New York Mets. His colleague Alden Gonzalez stated that Skubal would love to return to Los Angeles. He cited the established team culture, the organization's resources, and Skubal's friendship with Blake Snell as key factors.

Gonzalez added that the decision will come down to price. He pointed out that the Dodgers must decide whether to match the financial capacity of the Mets, owned by Steve Cohen, while considering the threat of a salary cap.
