Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season came to a sudden halt at Aston Villa. The visitors fell to a 2 1 defeat on Saturday, marking their first loss of the campaign. This result ends a remarkable run for the reigning champions and shifts the dynamic at the top of the table.
Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the home side. He provided the decisive performance for Unai Emery's rebuilt squad. The defeat is significant for Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca. He had become the first manager to win his opening seven Premier League matches after taking charge of a new club. He could not find a solution at Villa Park, a venue where City have lost in each of the last four seasons.
Villa took the lead just six minutes into the match. A heavy touch by Marc Guehi gifted the ball to Jackson. The striker cut inside Elliott Anderson and blasted a high shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma. City controlled possession for much of the first half but faced constant resistance from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. He denied efforts from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post, keeping the scoreline at 1 0.
Erling Haaland leveled the score in the 52nd minute. He powered in a header from a cross by Ndiaye. This goal marked his 13th in 10 appearances this season. Moments later, Josko Gvardiol nearly put City ahead, but Suzuki turned his fierce drive onto the crossbar. The match swung back to Villa at the hour mark. Ibrahim Mbaye found space behind the defense and crossed for Jackson. His low finish should have been saved by Donnarumma, sealing the win for the hosts.
The result allows Arsenal to move level on points with City at the top of the table if they beat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, this is their sixth win in seven games across all competitions. The victory lifts them to sixth place in the standings. It highlights the progress Emery has made since arriving four years ago, transforming the club into a Champions League contender.
Emery has achieved this success despite losing much of his core squad. Six players who started the Europa League final left during the transfer window. The summer signings of Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi are already paying off after a slow start to the season. Their performances show the depth of Emery's rebuilding project.
City had continued to win despite uncertainty over their Premier League future. The 10-time English champions are appealing a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaking financial rules between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions could include heavy fines or even relegation. There was little sign of this affecting the players on the pitch, but two sloppy defensive errors ultimately cost them the match at Villa Park.
