Latvian Drone Debris Found: Wreckage Discovered Near Alūksne

Latvia's National Armed Forces confirmed on Saturday that they located the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle in the Alūksne district. The military stated the drone likely entered Latvian airspace on 18 October.

The incident began with a reported noise resembling an explosion. Authorities launched a search involving the National Armed Forces and the State Police to locate a crash site. That initial effort concluded after two days because officials lacked sufficient information to determine what had occurred.

The discovery occurred one day after a similar event in Lithuania. On Sunday 18 October, debris from a suspected drone was found in the village of Juodžionys within the Pasvalys district. Lithuania reported the aircraft entered its airspace from Poland.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated the drone contained explosives. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. Ukraine expressed regret regarding the event.

Latvian authorities announced an investigation into the specific circumstances of the crash. A separate internal review is underway to assess the factors surrounding the incident. The military reported that no civilians were injured and no civilian infrastructure was damaged.

Officials stated they have not identified any further threats to the region. The confirmation of the debris site marks the first concrete physical evidence of the 18 October airspace incursion.
