Baltimore residents now have a new set of visual guides to help prevent winter fires. The Baltimore City Fire Department and Red Cross of Central Maryland launched a four-part video campaign on November 2, 2026. The series releases one educational clip every week throughout the month. Each video offers specific instructions for households facing colder temperatures and holiday cooking demands.

The initiative responds to a sharp rise in local incidents. During November and December 2025, Red Cross teams assisted hundreds of residents following nearly 100 home fires in the city. Lenora Henry, executive director of the Red Cross of Central Maryland, stated that home fires are the most frequent emergency for local disaster response teams. Nationally, the organization handles approximately 20 percent more residential fires during these two months than at other times of the year.

Fire officials provided specific precautions for families using heating equipment. Chief James W. Wallace noted that many winter house fires are preventable. He emphasized that working smoke alarms and practiced escape routes make a critical difference. Recommendations include testing smoke alarms and replacing batteries. Residents should keep space heaters at least three feet away from combustible materials. Officials also advised against overloading extension cords and leaving cooking equipment unattended.

The campaign will conclude on November 23 with a live demonstration at the Baltimore City Fire Department Training Academy. The event will feature practical fire safety drills for attendees. Families can also prepare in advance by reviewing prevention resources available online.

The Red Cross offers free disaster assistance to households affected by a fire. Residents can call 1-800-RED CROSS to request support after a home fire. The organization aims to connect affected families with immediate aid and resources for recovery.
