Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces increasing pressure after his team lost 2-0 to Chelsea on Saturday.
The defeat extends United's winless streak in all competitions to nine matches, a run that matches their longest drought since 1988. The club now holds only one win in nine Premier League games and sits just one point above the relegation zone. Their next two league fixtures are against Aston Villa and Liverpool, a schedule that could place the 20-time champion in the bottom three of the table.
The game at Stamford Bridge turned on a fourth-minute red card for Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine defender received a second yellow card after a video review confirmed he struck Wesley Fofana in the face with a raised elbow during a corner kick. Martinez had recently criticized the club's hierarchy, adding tension to his dismissal. As he left the field, Carrick did not look at him. The manager later described the moment as having major importance on the game.
Chelsea capitalized on the numerical advantage with second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer. Palmer converted a 64th-minute penalty following the incident that sent Martinez off. Carrick, who restored Bruno Fernandes to the starting lineup for this match, acknowledged that things had gone against his team in a big way. He stated that he expected to remain in charge for United's next match, a Champions League game against Roma on Tuesday.
The day was also difficult for Manchester City, which lost 1-0 at home to Brighton. This marks City's second consecutive league defeat after opening the season with seven wins. Yasin Ayari scored the winning goal in the 11th minute. The loss ends a seven-game scoring streak for striker Erling Haaland, who now sits four goals behind Jamie Vardy's record for consecutive match goals. City manager Enzo Maresca, the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games, noted that the team was aware they would not win every match.
Brighton's victory moved them into third place, two points behind the leader. The team has beaten both Arsenal and City this season without conceding a goal. Meanwhile, Bournemouth secured a sixth straight win in all competitions by beating Leeds 2-0, maintaining a clean sheet in every match of that run.
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 in another match on Saturday. Palace played with 10 men after Jean-Philippe Mateta received a straight red card in the 13th minute for a tackle on Micky van de Ven. Sunderland remains last in the league after a 3-1 loss to Coventry, while promoted teams Hull and Ipswich drew their respective matches.
